Creating a Statewide Technology Partnership ProgramThe Need: A State Education Department, which had developed a long-range vision for the use of technology in schools, desired to encourage technology industries to design and support pedagogically-sound technology solutions for learning. Funding was required to create several pilot projects in schools demonstrating how technology applications potentially serve increased student achievement and high learning standards. Resources were needed for acquiring hardware, software, infrastructure, and staff development expertise. The Solution: The staff of Writing Grants forged partnerships with IBM Corporation, Microsoft Corporation, Apple Computer, and Verizon Corporation totaling $13.8 million for establishing over 100 technology demonstration programs in schools. The grant funds were used for the following: IBM Corporation Partnership: Provided 13 elementary schools and 13 postsecondary teacher training institutions with networked clusters of five computers in each classroom; software; local area network technology; technical assistance; and, training support for thousands of educators, students, and parents. Apple Computer, Inc. Partnership: Funded projects in 100 schools demonstrating the power of technology to improve student achievement by providing: computer hardware; software; peripherals; special equipment; and, staff development support for thousands of teachers, students, and parents. Microsoft Corporation Partnership: Established Microsoft Professional Development sites in over 100 schools by providing software licenses and training support to thousands of teachers. Verizon Partnership: For each of three years, funded 25 projects in schools for assessing the pedagogical contributions of the Internet by providing Internet service; networking technology; computer hardware; software; technical support; and, training to teachers.
