Creating a Community Technology Learning Center
The Need:
An economically distressed small city with a large percentage of the population historically unemployed required funding for implementing a community technology learning center for training youth and adults on 21st century workforce skills. Partnering with a non-profit statewide education agency, the City sought funding for the facility, technology, and training resources.
The Solution:
From 1999-2000, the staff of Writing Grants secured funds totaling $621,000 to establish the Community Learning Center from the City's Redevelopment Foundation and from a regional Enterprise Community foundation provided by both a State economic development foundation and the U.S. Department of Housing and Community Development.
The grant funds were used to establish a 7,000-plus sq. ft. state-of-the-art technology training facility, which included the following resources:
Three training labs of computer workstations networked to a secure server, consisting of firewall, network software, servers, routers, racks, and monitors, housed in a fire protected and secure server room.
Computer wiring drops.
High-speed, broadband Internet service (equivalent of 3 megabytes).
Peripherals, including color and black and white laser printers, duplication equipment, fax equipment, CD recorders, and projection technology.
Furniture, telephones, office renovations, and security equipment.
Electrical wiring with state-of-the-art power back-up.
Software, including applications software, tool software, and career assessment software.
Staff and consultant trainers.
