Government GrantsWe’ve all seen numerous commercials on radio and television about how you can get government grants for just about anything. While this is true it is not as easy as the commercials make it out to be. First you should know that there are established teams of people who sole job is to apply for government grants. If you are not experienced in the applications process you may very well not be considered. In addition, the government looks for an application that somehow also will benefit your community and not only you personally. The next hurdle if you get the grant, is that the government is very strict in it’s enforcement of the grant terms. They will most likely want someone to look in on you to make sure that the money is really being used for the purpose stated. They will also want detailed paperwork on where every penny is being spent. Any monies not used must be returned to the government. If you do get the government grant and use any of that grant money for purposes other than that stated there are harsh penalties and even imprisonment waiting for you. While a government grant is not impossible to get, it can be very difficult to get and manage, especially if you are going it alone. There are 26 Federal grant making agencies offering over one thousand grant programs, in twenty one categories from agriculture to transportation. If you are serious about pursuing a government grant, it can be a long drawn out process. The first and most important decision you need to make is to decide on which grant is right for you. Then you will need to fill out the application. It will be more of a process rather than just filling out a piece of paper. Take your time and do your research. Good luck with your grant!
