Grant Writing

The most important core job of your organization will be writing grants or otherwise raising money for the projects that you want to do. Most funders will have application forms that they will want you to fill out. If they do not and you have to write a grant from scratch, here is a guideline that should provide most if not all the information that the funder will need from you.

The first thing is to write a summery telling the funder who you are, how much money you are seeking, and precisely what the money will be used for. Just a few sentences will do it. The next thing is to describe in detail who you are as an organization. In grant writing you need to tell the funder what your mission statement is, the purpose and history of your organization, your size, and what you’ve done in the past. They will want to know what programs your organization is currently involved with and what of who you serve in the community.

The next part of your grant writing will be to describe the reason you are asking for the funding. You will first tell them about the problem in the community that you wish to solve. In your grant writing you will have to explain it in such a way that they know why it’s a problem. They then need to know what your plans are to solve the problem and how the funding will be used. Give as many details on the project as possible in writing your grant. They will want to know when, where, how, and the time frame from start to finish. Detail where the money will go down to the penny.

Last but not least, you should enclose your budget from the previous year, and the proposed budget for the currant year. It is a lot of work but it’s well worth it when your grant is approved.
